Process Details

The following is a walk through of the major steps and equipment used in the moulding process.

  1. If the client does not possess any existing tooling for their product, then tooling needs to be initiated:


    1. First a prototype pattern is prepared, with this pattern a 'first off' casting is made to determine the dimensional and mechanical properties of the part.

    2. If the 'first off' casting passes inspection, a matchplate is made in order to mass-produce the part. If the 'first off' casting fails, the pattern is modified and the process repeated.

  2. The matchplate is used to make sand moulds. The moulds act as receptacles to receive the molten metal.

  3. Once the metal has cooled, the mould is taken to shake out to remove the casting from the sand.

  4. The casting is taken to the finishing department to have the gates, risers and parting lines removed.

  5. Tensile tests for each melt lot are conducted in our lab on our Tensile Test Machine if required by specifications or client requirements.

  6. Chemical tests for each melt lot are conducted in our lab on our Spectrometer if required by specifications or client requirements. X-ray and dye penetrant inspection services are also available.
